This coup stick is approximately 23.5″ long. It is wrapped with black rabbit fur and chocolate brown deerskin leather. It is decorated with an animal tooth, horse hair, glass crow beads, brass cones, and simulated eagle feathers.

Counting coup was a system of earning honor among Native American Plains tribes, where warriors gained prestige and status not by killing an enemy, but by demonstrating extreme bravery through acts like touching an enemy with a hand or a “coup stick” and escaping unharmed, or stealing an enemy’s horse or weapon.

Also used as a prayer stick, it has prayer feathers attached. In modern times, a coup stick is often used as a dance staff.
