This talking stick is wrapped in authentic buckskin and is decorated with rabbit fur. It has fringes on one end that are decorated with glass crow beads and ringneck pheasant feathers. It is approximately 13″ (33.12cm) long, not counting the 4″ (10.16cm) fringes on the end and about a 1″ (2.54cm) in diameter.
Talking sticks were used in Tribal councils to maintain order. Whoever had the talking stick had the floor, and everyone else was forbidden to talk until the speaker passed the stick to someone else, indicating they had finished what they had to say on the subject being discussed.
When the next person received the talking stick, it was customary to pause for a few moments to reflect on what the previous talker had said, and to compose your thoughts before you began to speak, so you did not speak rashly in anger in the heat of the moment.
Talking sticks are still a valuable tool for couples, school teachers and guidance counselors today.
Hand crafted in the USA.
