This deerskin talking stick is wrapped in authentic buckskin and is decorated with rabbit fur and Golden Pheasant feathers. It has 4 fringes on the top and multiple fringes on the other end. The pheasant feathers are held on with authentic glass crow beads. It is approximately 13" (33.02cm) long, not counting the fringes on each end and is about .75" inch (1.905 cm) in diameter.

You can choose the leather and fur colors below. If you have a preference for bead colors, leave a comment in the comment box on your checkout form.

Talking sticks were used in tribal councils to maintain order. Whoever had the talking stick had the floor, and everyone else was forbidden to talk until the speaker passed the stick to someone else, indicating they had finished what they had to say on the subject being discussed.

When the next person received the talking stick, it was customary to pause for a few moments to reflect on what the previous talker had said, and to compose your thoughts before you began to speak, so you did not speak rashly in anger in the heat of the moment. Talking sticks are still a valuable tool for couples, school teachers and guidance councilors today.
