When you buy commercially tanned leather, the square feet of the hide is usually stamped on it, but sometimes the stamp is not legible. Here is a simple formula to measure square feet.

Measure across the average width and average height of the hide. Multiply those two numbers together.

If one side of the hide has an area that is wider or taller than the rest of the hide, draw an imaginary line to section off the parts not included in the original measurment.

Multiply the two sides of those sections together and add the results to the first set of numbers.

When you have all the sections of your measurements added together, divide that number by 144. That is the square feet of the total hide.
