What to do when your weft thread is too short for your project

1595 Views

When using a loom, the warp threads are the threads that actually attach to the loom and run up the length of it. The weft threads are the threads threaded into a needle that you weave with.

If you run out of weft thread, you can tie off what you have and add a new length of thread so that you can continue weaving. This tutorial will show you how to add more weft thread when you run out in the middle of a loomed project.

Step 1

From the left side of your project, run the needle through the end bead and pull the thread through. Be sure to enter the bead with the eye end of the needle.

Step 1

Step 2

Run the needle behind the second bead, under the last row of weft thread and the warp thread to the left, then up between the beads.

Step 2

Step 3

Pull the thread through until a small loop forms. Then, run the needle through the loop to create a knot.

Step 3

Step 4

Pull the knot tight.

Step 4

Step 5

Run the needle through a few beads. You can move the thread to another section of beads and tie another knot like the one you created in step three for added security if necessary.

Step 5

Step 6

To avoid the risk of accidently snipping the warp and weft threads along the outside edges of your loomed piece, trim the tail between two beads.

Step 6

Step 7

To add a new weft thread, run the needle through the last bead on the right side of the loomed piece. Please note that if there is too much bulk for the needle to pass through because of the knots, you can add the new thread to a different row like we have done here.

Step 7

Step 8

Tie a knot in the same manner as steps two and three.

Step 8

Step 9

Pull the knot tight. Move the thread to another location and tie another knot if necessary.

Step 9

Step 10

Thread the needle through the end of the first bead on the last row.

Step 10

Step 11

The needle is now in the postion to continue beading. Make sure the tail is sticking out between two beads and trim the tail.
